How often does it run, when will the trains be renewed and how many trains are there anyway? All this can be found on over 700 pages in the contract for the operation of the S-Bahn. The contractual partners are the Verband Region Stuttgart on the one hand and DB Regio AG/S-Bahn Stuttgart as the operator. The transport contract was awarded in a Europe-wide competitive procedure. It ensures a far-sighted, high-quality and economical S-Bahn service.
With the decision to purchase 58 new trains, the redesign of all vehicles and the introduction of ETCS, the contract was adapted and extended until 2032.
With many positive effects for passengers:
- The vehicle fleet will be increased by almost 40 percent and capacity will thus be massively expanded.
- ETCS/ATO ensures noticeable quality improvements.
- The vehicles will be given a new exterior paint job and will also have a new and functional interior design.
- More lines and journeys will be added to the S-Bahn.

S-Bahn contract from 2032
Even though there are still seven years to go, the Verband Region Stuttgart has already started preparations for a new S-Bahn contract.
- The aim: a far-sighted, high-quality and economical S-Bahn service.
As a first step, the Verband Region Stuttgart is examining what conditions it must create as the client for the S-Bahn to ensure fair competition. To this end, it has held talks with rail transport companies as part of a market investigation and organized a so-called S-Bahn hearing. The members of the regional assembly received important input from experts on the planned award procedure - from the perspective of transport companies, passengers, vehicle manufacturers and other public authorities.
