The network is growing
The regional assembly of the Verband Region Stuttgart decides on possible extensions of the S-Bahn lines. Here is an overview of all approved measures that are currently in the planning or implementation phase:
Subway instead of the Schusterbahn
In several phases, the Schusterbahn will be converted into a commuter rail line running from Esslingen to Walheim. As part of this project, service frequency will be increased.
S5 to Vaihingen (E)
Several options are being considered for this line extension. They are currently under review.
Mittnachtstraße bus stop
When Stuttgart 21 opens, this will become a major transfer hub. The S1, S2, and S3 lines will intersect with the S4, S5, and S6 lines.
S66 Schwabstraße–Böblingen
The S66, in combination with the S60, is expected to enable 15-minute service intervals between Renningen and Böblingen. It will replace the S62 and will also be extended from Feuerbach to Schwabstraße.
S5 to Böblingen
The Stuttgart Digital Hub will make it possible to extend the S5 line. Four trains per hour in each direction will run to Vaihingen, and two of those will continue on to at least Böblingen.
S3 to Neuhausen in the Fildern region
The S-Bahn extension to Neuhausen is currently under construction. Its completion is firmly targeted for 2028.
S1 to Nürtingen
Work is currently underway on the S-Bahn line to Nürtingen. Once regional and long-distance trains have been rerouted to the new line, the first S-Bahn trains are scheduled to begin running.
S10 to Geislingen (Steige)
Planning is currently underway for a new commuter rail line from Schwabstraße to Geislingen an der Steige.
S7 via the Panoramic Railway
Follows the route of the Panoramabahn and then continues on the Strohgäubahn to Heimerdingen.
S1 to Oberlenningen
The small Teckbahn line is to be electrified and upgraded for commuter rail service.
S1 to Weilheim
The line from Kirchheim (T) to Weilheim is to be reactivated for commuter rail service.
